Trump’s Potential Fatal Errors: Not for Him, But the Country. Pt. 1

Is he stupid or pretending to be?

To this day, I have been needled by a suspicion that Donald Trump is actually a shill for the sleazy, Clinton wing of the Democratic party. I’ve said many times, including when he was just hitting the political scene, and in my book. I had a hard time coming to grips with his immaturity, impetuousness and utterly disorganized style.

How, as I have often asked, here and elsewhere, can his clearly erratic behavior be actual stupidity and not just political shtick? Is he really trying? Or is he putting a four-year monkey wrench in the GOP, damaging their brand for the next decade?

Don’t get me wrong. When he seems to have at least gotten a basic concept right, I have been happy to say so. But he still gets so much wrong. And so many people seem to have it in their heads that Trump is a genius and worse, they think he is a conservative.

He is neither.

I’ll give you an example The President gets endless praise for his tax cut. But, with just a little ass kissing by congressional leadership, he owned a pathetically watered down version of a cut, without the valuable reform he had promised. If you were paying attention and not just celebrating this fig leaf legislation, you came away thinking what a sucker this guy is. With the slightest stroking of his ego, Trump will sign off on anything.

Continuing the same example, with little preparation and in complete ignorance of history, Trump spiked the entire economic uptick the tax cuts did provide with the monumentally stupid tariff announcements and implementations.

I will go into greater detail about this in my next book.

The costs of the Trump ego

Tariffs are wrong on too many levels to fully catalog here.  But a few aspects do leap out in this case.

1) First, as is ALWAYS true, tariffs help the bottom lines of the protected companies ONLY and, without exception, hurt the wider economy. The very people who are singing the praises of the administration’s get-tough trade policies are the ones being hurt by it, along with the entire world’s economy.

President Donald J. Trump

2) If you follow the news cycles from Trump’s election, through the tax cuts and through the tariff announcements, you can plainly see that our economy was expanding beautifully. This was the direct result of someone – anyone – other than BHO going to the White House and that someone was talking about free market concepts.

As a result (and because we are still the world’s largest consumer economy) the world’s economies were expanding apace.  Even the PIGS (Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain) were suddenly healthy again.

But along with the rest of the world, our markets were thrown into turmoil and volatility because of this very stupid tariff idea.  The PIGS are now talking about defaulting again.

As ridiculous as the idea of tariffs already is, the way Trump rolled them out (i.e., with no forethought) we have this untenable situation as a result!

3) On top of the damage EVERYONE but the cronies who own the political whores feel, tariffs don’t work. They never have and they never will[1].  This how it will all play out:  We will place tariffs on whatever. Other countries will respond in kind (or maybe not because they already skim money from us on a huge scale.)  There will be “negotiations”.  In the end, when we’ve all had a bellyful of this stupid idea, all parties will declare victory and we will go back to where we all were before, relative to the economies of each country involved.

source: The Spectator

4) As was the case in the Travel Ban and the Zero Tolerance border policies[2], rolled out by executive order early in the Trump Administration, tariff actions were announced and launched impetuously and without any adult supervision.

The result? Peter Morici, a respected economist, points out correctly that we now have barriers to raw materials for, say, bicycle parts and metal tubes, but no barriers against foreign bicycles.  As a result, American bike makers have to pay more for their raw materials, giving foreign makers a market advantage.  MEANWHILE, YOU NOW PAY MORE FOR A BIKE BECAUSE NO MANUFACTURER, FOREIGN OR DOMESTIC, IS IN THE BUSINESS AS AN ACT OF CHARITY!

5) In order to do what only Congress is permitted to do (introduce tariffs) by executive order, DJT declared our trade deficit vs the rest of the world is a national security issue.  Am I the only person who see how perfectly insane this position is?

For more about the roots of this tariff debacle, and my earlier warning, read this.

Give me fair trade or I’ll kill you

Was the rest of the world going to attack the United States because we made it too easy for them to sell their goods here?  Were we on the verge of nuking Canada because of their unfair treatment of American dairy farmers? I’m going to go way out on a limb here and say neither was about to happen?

I would submit, and history does insist, that the placing of tariffs, especially by a stronger nation, are more likely to be the catalyst of unrest and even war.

Look at Germany immediately before and then after the clearly discredited Smoot/Hawley tariffs were rolled out.  Germany was struggling mightily to recover from World War II.  As they were beginning to turn the corner, people like Hitler were looked upon as weird opportunists, trying to advantage of Germany’s weakened, but improving, state of affairs.  Our market collapse in 1929 sent shock waves through the world economy. But the suffering was well distributed. Countries like Germany were continuing to work their way into world markets albeit at a slower pace.

Smoot and Hawley, two old men pictured from 1930s.
The authors of Smoot Hawley (that would be Smoot and Hawley themselves) the Dumb and Dumber of 1930.

Then along comes the Smoot/Hawley debacle.  Immediately, what was left of Germany’s chances of recovery were put off by at least a decade.  Already weak, the German economy had the chair kicked out from underneath it.  Suddenly, the blame-the-rest-of-the-world activists, including Hitler and the Communists, were seen as visionary. When you are dangling over the edge of the cliff, you’ll grasp at anything.

Germany, circa 1930 – 31 would be similar to our PIGS now. Their politics and economics are in ever increasing disarray. The tariffs aren’t helping them or the US in any way.

The cliché is: “When goods stop crossing borders armies soon will”.  It’s a cliché because it is true. So the talk of needing tariffs for national security reasons was undiluted bullshit from day one.

But, boys and girls, if I may be permitted the microaggression of noting the difference, we are now facing a far greater threat from Trump than any harm this tariff lunacy might do to us.

In an upcoming post I will outline the greater threat and the stupidity (not just Trump’s stupidity, this is widespread ignorance) behind it. In a separate post I will define the clear solution to our trade deficit.  I will give you a hint about the latter: We are SUPPOSED to have trade deficits with just about every other country because we are stronger and richer than they are.

An Un-serious Nation Mourns

Any time I see images of the events of 9/11, and certainly at this time of year I am overwhelmed with three emotions; awe at the heroics of those who those walked into the burning towers, deep sorrow for the pain so many families suffered and a deep, burning hatred for the hijackers and anyone remotely like them.

I am generally an easy-going guy.  I forgive easily.  But unburdened by a mandate to forgive, I keep the hatred of violent religious nut bags fresh within me.  I see no reason to feel any other way about it.  That kind of human sewage deserves every pain that might befall it.

Almost as Disturbing:

But today, in addition to all that, I felt a very disturbing bemusement.  We are 15 years removed from that day.  I expected the experience would have made of us a stronger people.  I’m not alone in having thought on 9/12 that this would be our Great Depression or WWII.  This would be the galvanizing experience that would make my generation and that of my sons finally measure up to our parents’ and grandparents’ generation.  Watching history unfold today, it struck me just how wrong I was.

It only took a couple of years before our collective resolve waned.  We started hearing about how war-weary the country was.  War-weary!  While “thanks for your service” is still heard, and very much appreciated, that is pretty much the extent of what this nation can stomach.  We still haven’t been tested.  Not really.  I often wonder if Americans possess the fortitude to endure a crisis like WWII.  Thousands of telegrams every week for years, reporting the deaths of our sons (and now daughters).  I have my doubts.

We are a nation more worried about safe spaces and politically correct, goddamned restrooms than we are the state of our nation and economy.  We stood by and let an American President cash in our long-term security and that of our allies in exchange for status and kind mention in the Muslim world. (The phony Iran nuke deal and support of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt.)  We are a nation that has placed, at the pinnacle of our national politics, a felon who has known only failure and corruption throughout her entire adult life and a reality TV populist who, to this day, gets his talking points off of Twitter.  We still have a security and intelligence apparatus that stovepipes information.  We allow our government to borrow us into inevitable doom and never question how that government can possibly continue to grow.

I am sure 9/11 changed many individuals.  I am sure there are people who try to do their jobs better, especially military and first responders, because of that day.  For a few years those lessons were likely passed on to the next trainee.  But as a nation, as a people, we have generally gone backward.

Hillary Milhous Nixon or Richard Rodham Clinton?

A Simpler, Happier Time

In the course of investigating a burglary of the Democratic headquarters in Washington, DC, Congress discovered that Richard Nixon had a surreptitious system recording all White House conversations. This was not new. FDR and Ike had such systems, as did Johnson and Kennedy. I have no doubt that every president since has had one. I’ll allow for a smart president who may not have wanted one for fear of taping himself saying something embarrassing.

But in those days it was considered bad form for gentlemen to collect information on others in this fashion. (Yes, there was a time when such things actually meant something.) So it was incumbent upon congress to feign shock and appear to do something. Most historians of the era correctly conclude it was the discovery of the covert tapes that caused momentum to shift against Nixon in front of Sam Irvin’s Watergate committee. A subpoena was issued for the White House audiotapes. The purpose was to see what could be gleaned about the Watergate cover up operation.

To that point, investigators only had hard evidence of a break-in – no one was disputing it at this point – and rumors that Nixon found out about the break-in and tried to cover it up. BUT… the ace kicker that sent the White House into a death spiral was an 18-minute gap in the taped evidence.

To this day, it is not known what was in the missing 18 minutes. It could have been something about the cover up. It could have been something unrelated which was so sensitive that someone decided better to dump it and risk further legal damage than to risk it being played in open committee. Maybe it was something really juicy about Nixon or someone on the White House staff. No one knows. But it could also be that the person transcribing the tapes actually did hit the wrong button, letting the system run before discovering the error, thus taping over conversation. That was the official line at the time.

The general consensus was Nixon tampered with evidence. Few people could be convinced otherwise. At that point Nixon’s impeachment and ultimate conviction in the well of the Senate was considered inevitable. That’s because as corrupt and divided as we saw our government at the time, there was still at least some sense of duty among statesmen. A huge number of politicians in both parties decided to do the right thing. No one circled the wagons and redefined the English language to create a 100% false narrative to protect a party or an individual; not even the President of the United States!

Nixon X 30,000 Documents = Clinton

Flash forward to two years ago. We discovered we had a Secretary of State who was actually the tip of the spear in a criminal conspiracy to breach national security, break several federal records laws and break several sensitive information laws. A short history can be found here.

Later we found out she destroyed federal documents by the thousands. (This could have been avoided if the FBI hadn’t been reduced to a pack of political goons and had followed protocol upon discovering the existence of an illegal server being used to transmit official State communications.) Any single one of these acts was far more insidious than anything Nixon ever dreamed of doing. None of them were a prideful or misguided act to protect underlings. All were cynical, illegal acts performed by the principal suspect to protect herself from mandatory oversight and hide shady, pay-for-play scams with cronies and foreign governments.

And at no point did anyone actually do anything effective to thwart or punish the crimes. Oh sure, Jason Chaffetz and Trey Gowdey have made just enough hay to keep their names in the news, but even they have dragged their feet. The entire Democratic Party apparatus inside the beltway has chosen to embrace seedy corruption over honorable service to their country in allowing Hillary Clinton to walk in the face of SO MANY blatant crimes. The Department of Justice and the IRS have been reduced to thugs covering up the crimes of their betters rather than serving the country.

And this week we hear not only did Clinton destroy documentary evidence, she commissioned a civilian company – which was not cleared to hold the documents to begin with – to destroy their backups almost a full month AFTER subpoenas had been served and preservation orders had been issued for that very evidence.

We’re Not Just Mucking About Here!

The complaints listed here against Hillary Clinton are not vague law school theory. Crimes, serious crime, have been committed. The chief perpetrator is running for president, unmolested. Her co-conspirators still work for her and work for her slush fund. If you were suspected of the same crimes, you’d be jailed without bond pending trial. If you were a similar risk to national security and had the Clintons’ track record for corruption, no judge would let you walk the street after arraignment. Your house would have been torn apart within hours of the server being discovered. You would not have had the months Clinton had to purchase software designed to cover up crime and carefully use it to permanently erase evidence.

This is handcuffs and prison shit, folks. Every day Clinton walks free and is not tossed in the back of a police car is another victory for the political criminals who are wrecking this republic.

How did we ever end up here? At what point did the Democratic Party completely sellout to slime? The Clintons are like the Peanuts character, Pigpen. Everywhere they have gone, for the last 35 years, they have moved in a cloud of blatant corruption. There has always been a stench about them. And yet there is no shortage of people willing to debase themselves by following in their fetid wake.

There is no legitimate media in this country anymore. It is one thing to have an editorial line and spin commentary in favor of one candidate of another. It is something else entirely to ignore rampant crime and corruption and willfully further lies and obfuscation in order to see a candidate win office.

Serious Americans Need To Read This!

Are you one of the 60% who disapprove of the two “major” candidates?  Would you like to take control back from the ruling class.  Are you a Democrat sickened by the prospect of voting for Hillary?  Are you a Republican who realizes “the Donald” is a clown and a fraud?  Would you like to do something about it? Let’s see some guts!

What Will It Take?

Trump once said that if he stood on 5th avenue and shot someone, he wouldn’t loose his following. Does anyone remember the reaction the left had to that remark? So what would it take for them to pull the plug on Hillary and go with Biden or Kaine? Clearly, harming our military and our security doesn’t count for anything.

One needn’t be a naïve boy scout to be disgusted with it all. It isn’t puritanical to be sickened by the prospect of this nation being represented by an arrogant, self-serving felon. You don’t have to be a fanatical patriot to understand the disdain the military holds at the very idea of serving under such a person. Here, I am not speaking of the post-Vietnam “yes” men who populate the high offices of the Pentagon. I am talking about the professional soldiers in the field, officers and enlisted, who still have a sense of honor about them.

It appears doubtful that a very large number of voters share this sense of honor and dignity. If polls are accurate, about 45% of the people still think Hillary Clinton deserves their vote. Is it ignorance of the facts or a lack of fortitude?
